ATAMI

– 3 days trip first time to Japan

This was our family’s first trip to Japan. We first visited Atami and Oochiyama in Ito, spent 3 days there.

Accommodation and transportation weren’t cheap. Surprisingly, accommodation was charged per person, which was quite unusual. We later learned this was due to food and accommodation taxes.

To my surprise, Mount Omuro was still closed. After taking a bus for almost an hour, I arrived and found out. Google Maps had marked it as closed, but I didn’t notice. On the way back, I climbed Mount Komuro, took a look at the sea, and could see Mount Fuji in the distance. I had an ice cream on the mountain. A unique experience was that the ticket for the cable car up the mountain could be used to buy a cup of coffee at a discounted price at the top of the mountain, and then sit on the observation deck. However, some travel blogs wrote that it could get an icecream for free. Many compatriots from China were asking for ice-cream, and the girl in the coffee shop was almost at the end of her rope explaining.

After using the hotel’s hot spring, I found that the beach was not open yet, and the fireworks festival was still a month away. The seaside was very quiet. I enjoyed seafood and popular desserts, but I’ll come back another time. I came at the wrong time this year. The atami tower is the highest place to take a birdview, we took the cable car up , and found there was a sex museum , but almost no tourists. As we took my young daughter, we just passed and moved on.

I still went to Daisen Mountain, as it was the main reason for my visit to Ito. It’s magnificent, and the cable car ride is quite interesting. It was my first time on such a dangling cable car with an open bottom. From the top of the mountain, looking at the distant mountains, it’s hard to imagine what it was like when the volcano erupted. Compared to nature, human power is so insignificant.

Then went to Nippori in Tokyo for a more in-depth exploration of popular tourist spots.

The Sakura Hotel was a simple hostel-like place, very conveniently located. There was a great eel rice restaurant next door, which was authentic and reasonably priced.

We spent two days with our daughter in Akihabara, the anime and manga mecca, eating sushi and eel rice.

Tokyo and Atami are very different. Atami is much more traditional; people walk on the left. Tokyo is much more international and inclusive. In Tokyo, you can basically live in English, but in Atami, you need Google Translate.
